• Butterfield Acres Staff with Spring Kids

Schools, Preschools, Community Daycamps, Daycare

i.e., weekday children’s groups

We frequently hear from teachers that Butterfield Acres is their favorite field trip. For over 30 years we’ve lived by our motto of “Farming, Fun, and Learning”, and have given thousands of Calgary’s children and teachers an authentic taste of farm life. We now regularly see Teachers who came here as children themselves and are excited to share this learning experience with the next generation. The Spring Babies experience also lends itself quite nicely to a special year-end windup and picnic.

Our programs are child-centered and very hands-on and support many curriculum objectives. Teachers are amazed by how much the children learn just being in this environment for such a short time. It is a fond stand-out life experience for many children.

To make your trip run as smoothly as possible, we provide a comprehensive field trip information package for both Teachers and Parents.

TEACHING YOUR CLASS NURSERY RHYMES?

Many Nursery Rhymes are farm-based (as was life when they were written), so when  Kim and Lori (2 of our teachers on staff) wanted to set up a Nursery Rhyme Park in the corner of the Farmyard…. the wheels started turning!

Look for creative play, vocabulary, rhyming, all the wonderful things that Nursery rhymes introduce to our children.

Action-oriented, and great fun.

Excellent environment for teachers to bring this to life with their students.

An excellent kick-off activity for FALL programming, but can be managed with our farmyard experiences May through June. Animal visit and wagon ride included.

Teachers encouraged to do a site visit prior to their first Nursery Rhyme Park class visit.  Come and visualize how you can make this wonderful resource work for you!

OCTOBER HARVEST PUMPKIN HUNTS

With fall comes the time to harvest and time to have a little fun with the fruits of the harvest! Climb aboard one of our big wagons and take a gentle rolling ride over the hills and through the woods… crunching through the golden fall leaves … searching for some really cute kid-sized pumpkins!

The visit includes hunting time, pumpkin decorating (no carving) & a farmyard visit with the animals too!

Each child takes home their very own pumpkin masterpiece.

Available all month but we recommend visiting the farm early so the pumpkin masterpieces can be admired by one and all for the entire month (they make great Thanksgiving table centerpieces)! Minimum group size is 20 children. Plan for 110 minutes. We ask for a 3:1 ratio.

Other ideas:  some teachers are not decorating pumpkins, but taking them back to school for use in other learning areas, e.g., weights and measures, art classes.  We hear some wonderful ideas for stretching the pumpkin theme!

Another option: The Animals can come to see YOU! Year round!

It’s not quite the same experience as actually visiting the real farm, but… our Farm Corral can come to your school with a variety of child-friendly animals! We bring all the Corral fencing, equipment, and clean up supplies (we try to leave only memories behind!)

Group Bookings*

(other than weekday children’s groups)

Looking for something fun to do with all of your relatives or your neighbourhood friends? Maybe you want something adventurous and new for that next Corporate outing! Family BBQ, School Groups, Sparks or Beavers? Yer all welcome at Butterfield Acres!

Butterfield Acres Farm has just the answer you’re looking for!

We have 2 types of group bookings for you:

  1. SPECIAL EVENT BOOKINGS based on pre-purchased tickets
  2. GROUP BOOKINGS during regular visiting times

1. SPECIAL EVENT BOOKINGS:

Group bookings for Special Events begin 2 weeks prior to the general ticket sales. Pre-purchased tickets are required.

TO BOOK:  You can pre-book for the number of tickets you are likely to need.  There is a non-refundable deposit of $200 for each hunt (60 people) that you book.  That hunt is held for you until 1 week prior to the hunt when your final numbers (and your Guest List*) are due.  If you find you will need more tickets, call us as soon as possible and we will find a way to make that happen for you.

We issue you an original confirmation with basic information for you to use in planning.

ONE WEEK PRIOR  to your hunt:   we receive your final numbers and payment, along with your Guest List*.  Any spots not required will be returned to the public ticket pool. Your $200 deposit for each hunt is applied towards your ticket costs for that hunt.

You will be issued a final confirmation which you will circulate to all your ticket holders for their review.  It will contain important tips and information about the event, and safety information about the farm.

IMPORTANT: This confirmation will be shown by each person/family for admission to the event.

Good supervision of your children is, of course, essential, both for their safety and enjoyment, as well as for safety and kindness for the animals. Please check your Guest List to ensure there will be at least one adult for every 3 children.

Farm Safety Rules are important to know. Please ensure all adults are familiar with them. Please feel free to print them off this website and circulate them with other event details.

If you have any questions, or if you would like to book a group outing, let us know and we will work with you to make it a special day here at Butterfield Acres. Simply send us an email at farmfun@ButterfieldAcres.com

2. BOOKINGS during regular drop-in visiting times:

Plan for a visit of about 2 hours.  Ths time may vary depending on the age of your children, time of day, etc.  Plan for longer if you are planning on doing a picnic.  Typically our Milkhouse, Tractor and Pony Ride times, repeat every 2 hours, so in that time frame, you should be able to include them all.

Prepaid parties of 20 or more people will receive 10% off general admission when all fees are paid by one person at one time.   Please note that this applies ONLY to groups paying general admission rates.

IF YOU HAVE A LARGER GROUP getting the 10% discount on admissions, and there is even a remote possibility that you all will not arrive at the same time, we will get you to give us a  Guest List (first names only).  This is a great way to make all your guests feel very welcome while making admissions quick and easy for them.  For admission to the farm, your guests will simply give their name at the gate and ‘sign in’. Guests lists must be prepaid (no-shows can be refunded  if you check out to confirm this before you leave).

Good supervision of your children is essential, both for their safety and enjoyment, as well as for safety and kindness for the animals. Please check your Guest List to ensure there will be at least one adult for every 3 children.

Pony Rides are available for children under 60# (27kg).  No exceptions, sorry.   Tickets for the Public Pony Ride are $2 each, or  4 for $7.  These may be pre-paid when your admissions are paid.

Tractor rides with the public are free with admission, as is the milking lesson!

You may wish to make the visit extra special by pre-booking a Private Pony (available for children under 60#), or Private Wagon on the tractor ride. The Prairie Palace (our indoor picnic shelter), and a firepit may also be pre-booked.

Chomp ‘n Cones are available to feed the animals.  25 cents each.  If you are wanting many, please pre-order and we will have them ready for you in a convenient container.
